Skrillex Biography

Sonny John Moore, known professionally as Skrillex, is an American DJ and music producer. He grew up in Northeast Los Angeles and Northern California, where he joined the post-hardcore band “From First to Last” in 2004 as the lead singer and recorded two studio albums with the band titled “Dear Diary, My Teen Angst Has a Bodycount” released in 2004, and “Heroine” released in 2006. He left the band to pursue a solo career in 2007.

In late 2007, Moore began his first tour as a solo artist. He created a new band lineup and joined the Alternative Press Tour to support bands such as All Time Low and the Rocket Summer. He also appeared on the cover of Alternative Press’s annual “100 Bands You Need to Know” issue. In 2009, he released the “Gypsyhook EP.” Initially scheduled to record his debut studio album, Bells, with producer Noah Shain, Moore ceased production and began performing under Skrillex.

He distributed the dubstep EP “My Name Is Skrillex” for free download via his MySpace page. In late 2010, he released the “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites” EP and the “More Monsters and Sprites” EP in 2011. Both EPs were moderate commercial successes. He won three Grammy Awards that year, including “Best Dance/Electronica Album,” “Best Dance Recording,” and “Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical” out of five nominations. He has since won a total of eight Grammy Awards. He has also released three albums, “Recess” (2014), “Quest For Fire” (2023), and “Don’t Get To Close” (2023)”. The second and third albums were released a day apart. Skrillex collaborated with Diplo and Boys Noize to form the groups, Jack Ü and Dog Blood.

Moore was adopted by family friends of his biological parents but only found out when he was 15. With his family, he lived in the Highland Park neighborhood of Northeast Los Angeles. At the age of 2, he was brought to the Forest Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, where he attended elementary school. At age 12, his family moved back to his birthplace of Northeast Los Angeles.
