2023 Emmy Awards: Elton John Achieves EGOT Status With “Farewell From Dodger Stadium” Win

Elton John has made history by becoming the 19th person to win an EGOT, an acronym for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards. He was awarded this prestigious achievement after his Disney+ show, Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium, won Outstanding Variety Special at the Primetime Emmy Awards. The three-hour concert film was shot during John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, marking his retirement from touring. The show was a stunning visual and musical spectacle featuring some of his greatest hits and iconic performances.

Along with this latest win, John has also won five other Grammy Awards, including Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals in 1987 for “That’s What Friends Are For” and an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1994 for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from The Lion King, as well as another in 2019 for “I’m Gonna Love Me Again” from Rocketman. He also won a Tony Award for Best Original Score with Aida in 2000. John is the third pop star to achieve EGOT status, following John Legend and Jennifer Hudson. The most recent celebrity to achieve EGOT status before John was Viola Davis in 2023. She won Best Audiobook for reading the memoir ‘Finding Me’ at the 2023 Grammy Awards, pushing her into the elite bracket.

Despite being unable to attend the awards ceremony due to a knee injury, John was honoured by his publicist, who accepted the award. In an e-mail statement, John expressed his gratitude for the recognition and thanked his fans and collaborators for their support throughout his career.

“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight,”

“The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”
