Jennifer Hudson Mourns The Death Of Debra Byrd, American Idol Voice Coach, Who Passed At 72

Debra Byrd, the vocal coach for American Idol, passed away at the age of 72. Jennifer Hudson is in grief. No location or cause of death was provided when Deadline reported that Byrd passed away in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

In addition to serving as a coach on series like The Voice, Canadian Idol, Military Idol, and Majors and Minors, the voice coach worked for eleven seasons on American Idol. In addition, she assisted in coaching vocalists such as Kelly Clarkson and Barry Manilow, along with Hudson, whom she suggested for the part of Effie White in the Dreamgirls movie from 2006, as reported by the British newspaper The Independent.

By way of tribute, Hudson shared on her Instagram a headshot picture of Byrd and an old American Idol video of the two of them, in which Byrd tells Hudson that she “had to get rid of the gospel jaw.” In the last picture, Byrd and Hudson were positioned in front of a piano that Elton John was playing.

Byrd, who was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, studied at the Dobama and Karamu Theaters and attended Kent State University. She continued to tour the globe as a member of Ladyflash, Barry Manilow’s featured backup group, and perform with him for many years.
