Lil Mama Recalls “Crashing” Jay-Z & Alicia Keys’ MTV VMAs Performance

The year 2009 marked the MTV Video Music Awards with a performance that will be remembered for years. Jay-Z and Alicia Keys took to the stage to perform their smash-hit “Empire State of Mind.” However, their performance was interrupted by an uninvited guest. Lil Mama ran onstage despite Beyonce’s attempts to hold her back. She danced with the duo briefly before hitting a final pose.

Unfortunately, Lil Mama faced backlash from numerous outlets for her actions in the days following the awards show. However, during a recent appearance on The Jay Hill Podcast, Lil Mama spoke about the stage-crashing incident and how it affected her mental health. She recalled receiving a phone call from Tyrese, who inquired about her impromptu appearance the morning after the awards show. The incident soon became one of the hottest subjects of debate as people questioned Lil Mama’s decision to crash the stage. Lil Mama revealed that the incident had a severe toll on her mental health, and it took her a while to recover from it. However, she coped with the fallout by focusing on how “blessed” she is compared to those facing even more life-changing struggles.

Despite the controversy, the ‘Lip Gloss’ MC has continued to make music while participating in philanthropic work. The incident served as a lesson for Lil Mama and a reminder that one decision can significantly impact an individual’s positive or negative life.

She explained,

“I had to deal with Ed Lover on the radio in the morning, Wendy Williams, Angie Martinez, who talked to JAY, and he was just like, ‘Yeah, you know. I didn’t like it.’ He was so angry and I was just trying my best to do everything I could do. After a while, I was like, ‘Forgive yourself, bro. Move forward,'”  “Bro, I was hurt. I was depressed. I was like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ And then you got everybody telling you, ‘You’re doing bad.’ People pointing at you, like, ‘What did you do?’”
