South African Group, The Joy, Performs With Doja Cat During Her Explosive Coachella Set

This past weekend, South African vocal quartet The Joy achieved a significant musical triumph by participating in American rapper and vocalist Doja Cat’s headline show at the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California.

Doja Cat, who wrapped up the festival’s first weekend on April 14, hand-picked the ensemble to perform the rapper’s reworked Zulu lyrics on his hits “Acknowledge Me” and “Shutcho.” The performance followed the release of the group’s recent single ‘You Complete Me’ ahead of their eponymous 11-track debut album via Transgressive Records on June 21.

Live recordings for the album were made at London’s famed Church Studios. The Joy’s burgeoning melodies honor the Zulu tradition of a cappella singing, which is deeply ingrained in the fabric of South African culture, much like Ladysmith Black Mambazo did before them.

Based on the core of Mbube, which is Zulu for “lion,” the trio seems to harness an ancestral force via their vocals that goes beyond simple performance and suggests a spiritual bond with the people who first created the music. Their songs’ transformational power—likened to heavenly gates opening—has not only struck a chord with listeners but also propelled The Joy into uncharted territory.

Their music breaks across traditional borders and captures people’s hearts and minds all over the world, thanks to collaborations with renowned producers and endorsements from industry luminaries like Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys.
