Taylor Swift’s “Tortured Poets Department” Sells 700K LPs In Just 3 Days, Breaking The Record For Weekly Vinyl Sales

Talking about “breaking records” when discussing physical LPs seems odd, but when considering Taylor Swift, the contemporary vinyl queen, there is no way to avoid merging these concepts. In just three days, she shattered her own record for the most vinyl album sales in a week, selling 700,000 LP copies of “The Tortured Poets Department” over the weekend.

Swift’s album from October of last year, “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” set the previous weekly record when it sold 693,000 copies in a span of seven days. The news that Swift surpassed her own recent high-water record was first published by Billboard. Swift also held the record until “1989” overtook it in the previous year.

When “Midnights” was released in October 2022, it sold an astounding 570,000 LP copies, setting a record for weekly vinyl sales. You have to go back five months before “Midnights” to discover someone who was setting the record for the most weekly records who wasn’t Taylor Swift. At that time, Harry Styles had the highest registered figure since “Harry’s House” sold 372,000 vinyl copies in its first week.

While these records are being toppled, it should be noted that they are all for what is commonly referred to as “the modern era” — that is, for the years since SoundScan started maintaining meticulously researched sales totals for vinyl albums, CDs, cassettes, downloads, and all other formats, starting in 1991.
