Tems And Davido Score Wins At 2024 NAACP Image Awards

The 55th NAACP Image Awards recognize the successes of Afrobeats, with two of the genre’s leading musicians taking home awards. The 55th NAACP Image Awards were virtually held on March 11, 2024, and Tems won the Outstanding International Song award with her hit song Me & U on the first night of the ceremony.

Tems’ increasing list of accomplishments gets further strengthened by this distinction. Praise for the song’s sultry vocals and catchy rhythm surely brought it widespread recognition almost as soon as it was released. Her triumph not only benefits her personally but also the flourishing Afrobeats sound.

There were other Nigerian artists who excelled in the awards besides Tems. For their feature on Chris Brown’s Sensational, fellow musicians Davido and Lojay received recognition. The Outstanding Duo, Group, or Collaboration (Contemporary) prize went to them.

The NAACP Image Awards recognize exceptional accomplishments and the portrayal of people of color in media such as literature, music, television, and film. The achievement of Tems is noteworthy because it highlights the creative ability of Nigerian musicians and the global impact of Afrobeats.

At the NAACP Image Awards dinner on Thursday, March 14, hosted by Sherri Shepherd, pioneering R&B singer-songwriter Frankie Beverly will also receive special recognition as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award. This year’s Vanguard Award will be given to costume designer, designer, and tastemaker June Ambrose in honor of her many years as a trailblazer in the fashion business.
