Tems to Perform at Billboard Women in Music Awards 2024

Nigerian Songstress Honored with 'Breakthrough Award' Amid a Stellar Line-up of Global Artists

Tems, the Nigerian vocal powerhouse, is slated to dazzle attendees at the upcoming 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards. Announced via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Billboard, the event is scheduled to take place on March 6 at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles, California. Known for her soulful voice and captivating performances, Tems is not only set to perform but will also be honored with the prestigious ‘Breakthrough Award.’

This year’s Billboard Women in Music Awards is gearing up to be a monumental celebration, highlighting artists who underscore the music industry’s expansive global reach. Among those being recognized alongside Tems are notable figures such as Victoria Monét, Ice Spice, NewJeans, Maren Morris, Kylie Minogue, Charli XCX, Luísa Sonza, and Young Miko. The accolades this year particularly spotlight the diverse and global nature of contemporary music, with Tems being the sole Nigerian artist to receive an award at the ceremony.

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, first caught the global spotlight in 2020 through her collaboration with Wizkid on the hit song “Essence.” Since then, she has rapidly ascended to become a prominent name within the Nigerian music scene and beyond, amassing a collection of awards and accolades that testify to her talent and influence. Notably, in February 2023, Tems secured her first-ever Grammy win in the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ category for her contribution to “Wait for U,” the 2022 chart-topping track by Future featuring Drake.

Tems’ journey to stardom is as inspiring as her music. The singer has openly shared that her foray into music was driven by a desire for connection, stating, “I did not have friends.” Music became her avenue for expressing her thoughts and connecting with others, leading her to this moment of international recognition.

The 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards promises to be a night of celebration, not just of women’s achievements in music but of the power of music to bridge divides and bring people together. With Tems’ performance and the recognition of her breakthroughs, the event is set to highlight the continued evolution and globalization of the music industry.
