Furthermore, following several weeks of TikTok trending, Tyla made her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 list. Since jazz artist Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” debuted on the chart 55 years ago, Water is the first solo song by a South African musician to do so.

But Tyla, who is 21 years old, is the youngest musician from South Africa to be included on the list. Tyla also responded to the news on X, formerly Twitter, with excitement and disbelief. Afrobeats, pop, R&B, and Amapiano, a type of electronic dance music popular in South Africa, are among the genres that are blended together in her hit song.

The catchy track has been featured in over 500,000 videos on the app since it became viral on TikTok and sparked the water dance challenge. Through her dance videos, Tyla also promoted her heritage, putting the South African Bacardi dance routine on the map, thanks to her TikTok dance challenge.
