Offset has released “Set It Off,” his first solo LP in four years, marking the release of his much anticipated sophomore album. The Migos MC enlists Cardi B, Future, Travis Scott, Latto, Don Toliver, and more for his very personal contribution on the 21-track album, making it a star-studded affair.

Due to the shooting death of his Migos bandmate Takeoff, Offset’s second solo album was released in November instead of October as planned. How close the two were at the end is uncertain because Takeoff and third Migo Quavo appeared to have abandoned him in order to concentrate on their Unc & Phew project. The album helps throws a bit of light on that situation.

Offset is pictured falling in the opposite direction as the city up in flames, like it was hit with an tremendously powerful bomb. The plot twist is that he isn’t a victim. He Set It Off!

Tracks and Features

Southside’s simple trap opener “On the River” showcases his pen-game and quick flows, while Travis Scott’s “Say My Grace” talks about clearing space on his plate so that he can pray before they eat over a dramatic instrumental from Vinylz & FNZ. Prior to Future’s appearance on “Broad Day,” which flexes that they made a play over a beat with Detroit trap influences from Nick Papz, “Worth It” which features Don Toliver had a smoother vibe due to CHASETHEMONEY, who hoped they were satisfied with their bitches making them work.

Before “Freaky” with Cardi B, where the power couple can be heard gushing about how much they enjoy it over a ratcheting Tay Keith instrumental, “Fan” is a two-parter that combines aspects of Memphis rap and pop rap. However, “Don’t You Lie” hooks up a crooning sample & hi-hats talking about how “this shit ain’t bankroll.” “Hop Out the Van” contains one of the most awkward hooks on the album paying tribute to the late Lil Keed over top of a poor beat looking to let off the heat.

While “Big Dawg” blends these violins and hi-hats together warning that he’ll stomp you out, Boi-1da gives off a cloudier feeling to “I’m On” while flaunting that he can meet a chick and take her home on the same night. While “Skyami” with Mango Foo has one of the weakest guest performances despite the atmospheric beat & describing the penthouse life, “Night Vision” with Metro Boomin’s lavish instrumental and lyrics dive into exposing the opps while they hide.

In contrast to the glossy trap-tinged “Fine as Can Be” featuring Latto, which aims for a nocturnal vibe, “Dissolve” by Dez Wright asks the girl to tell him who she’s going to call when those drugs disintegrate. While “Dope Boy” starring Young Nudy displays their statuses from their days in the streets over an ominous backdrop and hi-hats, Wheezy’s production on “Buss My Watch” is just utterly stunning with Set showing off his Maison Margiela alongside his love interest.

Chlöe joins the father of five on the pop rap/R&B duet “Princess Cut,” which promises to put listeners to sleep. Cardi then makes a comeback with the abrasive “Jealousy,” which explores themes of enmity. The album’s initial title, “Blame It On Set,” which has piano and trap music, clarifies that people shouldn’t be very unhappy, while “Upside Down,” an emotionally open song, discusses how Takeoff’s müder has made him feel. However, “Healthy” ends the album with acoustics and hi-hats as he begs God to send him a sign.
