During his younger years, he played football at Vacaville High School. He is most recognized as the founding member and the consistent lead vocalist of the renowned California-based rock group Papa Roach since its inception in 1993.

According to Shaddix, the first year of his life was spent in homelessness with his family. Shaddix struggled with drug and alcohol misuse but hasn’t used it since 2012. Before being sober in 2012, Shaddix disclosed that he was suicidal. He acknowledged having a slight relapse during the COVID-19 pandemic because the stress of the situation led him to smoke weed. But after receiving support from friends, he quit smoking and hasn’t used drugs since. Shaddix, a devout Christian, has a history of singing Christian songs and hymns in public settings.

It was in 1999 when he decided to make a career in music. Before taking his singing career seriously, he used to work as a dishwasher and a janitor in a hospital.

Papa Roach was co-founded by Jacoby in 1993 alongside former drummer Dave Buckner, bassist Will James, and guitarist Ben Luther. Luther was later replaced by current guitarist Jerry Horton, and Tobin Esperance took over for James after his departure. 2007 Tony Palermo replaced Buckner, leaving Jacoby as the only original band member. The name “Papa Roach” was inspired by Shaddix’s step-grandfather, Howard William Roatch, who was affectionately known as “Papa Roach.” Howard passed away in 2006 after being diagnosed with an unspecified form of advanced-stage cancer. In his memory, the band wrote the song “Roses on My Grave.” Before their major-label debut album, Infest, Papa Roach recorded and released an EP in 1994 called Potatoes For Christmas. Their first full-length album, Old Friends from Young Years, was released in 1997.

In their 2004 album, Getting Away with Murder, Shaddix moved away from rapping altogether. According to an interview in 2004, Shaddix had grown disillusioned with hip-hop and its portrayal in the media. He expressed his desire to be known as a rocker instead. In 2009, he confirmed that he would not be returning to rapping. However, in 2012, Shaddix resumed rapping in The Connection album. In their 2017 album, Crooked Teeth, a few tracks included rapping.

Shaddix recently contributed new vocals for a remix of The Hu’s “Wolf Totem” on December 13, 2019. Before this, from 2002 to 2004, he fronted a post-hardcore band called Fight the Sky. Shaddix considered the band a side project where he could showcase his heavier vocal range. The band was composed of Wade Khail on lead guitar and backing vocals, Ali Abrishami on bass guitar and backing vocals, and Jay Ingram on drums and percussion. They signed with Papa Roach’s self-owned label, El Tonal Records, and recorded their debut album, “Seven Deadly Songs,” at Velvet Tone Studios in Sacramento, California, between January and February 2004. However, no public updates have been made regarding the album’s release date or the future of Fight the Sky.

Jacoby has made a name for himself in the music industry by contributing to Hard Rock, Alternative Metal, Alternative Rock, Nu Metal, Rap Metal, and Rap Rock genres. He has been represented by 10th Street Entertainment and collaborated with notable record labels such as Eleven Seven Records, DGC Records, Interscope Records, Geffen Records, and DreamWorks Records throughout his successful career.

With designer Jeff Henry, Shaddix is co-owner of the apparel company “Lovers Are Lunatics,” whose goal is “to create a brand that represents the rock community and showcases their unique creative vision.”
