Natalie Portman (born Natalie Hershlag) is an Israeli-born American actress. Since her teenage years, Portman has had a successful career in film. She has starred in various blockbusters and independent films and received multiple accolades for her performances, including an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.

She began her acting at the age of twelve, starring as the young protégée of a hitman in the action film Léon: The Professional in 1994. She made her Broadway debut in a 1998 production of The Diary of a Young Girl while in High School. Portman gained international recognition in 1999 for starring as Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Portman was accepted at Harvard University in 1999 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2003. She starred in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (2002, 2005) and The Public Theater’s 2001 revival of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull. For her performance as a mysterious stripper in the romantic drama Closer, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and won a Golden Globe Award. For her performance as a troubled ballerina in the psychological horror film Black Swan in 2010, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Her features in Marvel’s superhero films established her as one of the world’s highest-paid actresses.

Portman began dating French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied in 2009 after having met while working together on the set of Black Swan. The couple wed in a Jewish ceremony held in Big Sur, California, on August 4, 2012. They moved their family to Paris and lived there for some time. This was after Millepied accepted the dance director position with the Paris Opera Ballet. Portman also expressed a desire to become a French citizen. In January 2014, Millepied revealed he was in the process of converting to Judaism.

The couple’s marriage dominated the news in August 2023 after Millepied had an affair with a 25-year-old climate activist named Camille Etienne. According to a source for Dailymail.com, “[Natalie] hates that [Benjamin’s] infidelity has made her feel powerless. She doesn’t know if she can regain her power by staying with him or leaving him. It is really a struggle to have to continue to deal with it.” Portman was spotted in Australia without her wedding ring.

Lifestyle

Portman has said she felt more Jewish in Israel. And also stated she was raising her kids Jewish.

She signed with Dior in 2010 and appeared in several of the company’s advertising campaigns.

Portman attended Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School in Rockville, Maryland, and later, a Jewish elementary school, the Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County. She also studied ballet and modern dance at the American Theater Dance Workshop and regularly attended the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts.

From 1999 to 2003, Portman studied at Harvard University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
