Natalie Portman (born Natalie Hershlag) is an Israeli-born American actress. Since her teenage years, Portman has had a successful career in film. She has starred in various blockbusters and independent films and received multiple accolades for her performances, including an Academy Award and two Golden Globe Awards.
She began her acting at the age of twelve, starring as the young protégée of a hitman in the action film Léon: The Professional in 1994. She made her Broadway debut in a 1998 production of The Diary of a Young Girl while in High School. Portman gained international recognition in 1999 for starring as Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. Portman was accepted at Harvard University in 1999 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2003. She starred in the Star Wars prequel trilogy (2002, 2005) and The Public Theater’s 2001 revival of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull.
