Billy Joel Releases His First Single in 17 Years, “Turn The Lights Back On”

After a 17-year recording break, Billy Joel will return on February 1 with the release of “Turn The Lights Back On.” A press statement claims that the song is a classic Billy Joel song that captures the essence of his sound and ushers in the next phase of his career.

Freddy Wexler, who has produced hits for everyone from Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande to Kanye West, Blackpink, P!nk, Lil Wayne, Selena Gomez, and Celine Dion, produced “Turn The Lights Back.” Joel, Wayne Hector, Arthur Bacon, and Wexler wrote it.

Since 2001’s classical piano record Fantasies & Delusions, on which British-Korean pianist Richard Hyung-ki Joo performed instrumental works composed by Joel, there hasn’t been a Billy Joel album of any kind. River of Dreams, his 1993 pop album, was his last release.

Since then, he has done a lot of touring, but the only new songs he has released are the 2007 singles “Christmas in Fallujah” and “All My Life.” While the latter was a rock song with lead vocals by Cass Dillon, the former was a love ballad to Katie Lee, the artist’s then-wife. In 2008, a live version featuring Joel on vocals was made available.

Joel’s next performance is a headliner at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on January 24. He performs alongside Sting in a number of One Night Only concerts at American stadiums all year long.
