Kobe Bryant was seen on the bench, holding the championship trophy in his lap, following the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory in the 2001 NBA Finals. The picture caught a profoundly emotional moment that showed both triumph and a sense of hurt and despair.

Kobe’s sadness was caused by the fact that his parents, Joe and Pam Bryant, were not present for the series against the Philadelphia 76ers. They didn’t want to go to his games even though they were in Philadelphia at the time because they didn’t agree with his marriage to Vanessa Bryant, who was only 18 at the time.

Joe’s opposition stemmed from his desire for an African-American daughter-in-law, rather than Vanessa’s Latina origin. In spite of these personal struggles, Kobe played a fantastic game for the championship series, averaging 24.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.4 blocks per game on the field.

His emotional journey and the jacket he wore in the iconic shower picture came to represent his victories and setbacks.
