Doja Cat Deactivates Instagram, Cites Fan Toxicity As Reason

Doja Cat, the American singer and rapper, has had a tumultuous relationship with her fans. The artist took to Instagram on Saturday, March 9, to announce that she would be deactivating her account on the social media platform. As of now, her account has disappeared, leaving her followers confused. Doja Cat’s post expressed her feelings about the situation and provided reasons for leaving the platform. However, the announcement comes as no surprise given the various controversies she has been involved in, resulting in significant backlash from her fans. For instance, in August of last year, she received criticism for not reciprocating her fans’ love and instead told people to call themselves “Kittenz” and suggested that her fans “get a job.”

Although she appreciates all the success and opportunities across her career, there’s a limit to her appreciation. Many fans criticized her decision to leave Instagram and blamed them for turning their backs, whether justified or not. For example, her participation in racist chat rooms in the past ran its course and is something she’s grown from. More recent drama, such as the Scarlet Creative’s supposedly naive endorsement of Sam Hyde, whom she apparently didn’t know was tied to the alt-right, has made these developments fall into darker contexts. But it’s tough to say how much of this Instagram leave is due to legitimate criticism or undue hate because she’s gotten a lot of both recently.
