Fireboy DML States He Doesn’t Make Afrobeats Music On Purpose

Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has reaffirmed that he doesn’t purposefully create Afrobeats in a recent interview on the B and N show.

Fireboy declared that he doesn’t compose Afrobeats and that he prefers to make music with aspects of his culture when joining Bloody Civilian on the podcast. Fireboy reiterated his recent assertion that he created a genre called Afro-Live, which is distinct from Afrobeats, in his remark that he wasn’t making Afrobeats.

In an interview with BET, he made the assertion and took credit for introducing soul and depth to mainstream pop music in Nigeria. Social media users have criticized Fireboy for making this remark, particularly because it was made a few days after he proclaimed, “Afrobeats in the house,” during his Coachella performance.

The definition and origin of the name “Afrobeats” are still being debated, and more musicians are creating new labels to set their music apart from the genre. Burna Boy distinguishes his music from Afrobeats, claiming that it is Afro-fusion. Similarly, CKay describes his music as a fusion of Emo pop with African elements, labeling it as Afro-Emo.

For whatever reason, Wizkid also decided to hop on that bandwagon, clearly stating that he is not an Afrobeats artist. At this point, we’re wondering what the innocent genre did to deserve all the denouncement.
