Seun Kuti Discusses The Stigma He Had To Live With As Fela’s Son

The prominent Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, has voiced out the unfair treatment he has had to experience for being a son to the late music icon, Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Seun made sure to state that his success and fame as an artist, as well as those of his older brother Femi Kuti and nephew Made Kuti, are not solely dependent on their ancestry as the descendants of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. On Sunday, December 17, 2023, Seun Kuti disclosed this in an exclusive interview with Nollywood actress and businesswoman Iyabo Ojo’s Goldroom show.

Debunking the myth that their familial ties to Fela Kuti were a major factor in their success, the Grammy-nominated saxophonist stressed the value of hardwork and perseverance in obtaining success in the music industry, which is what worked for both himself and his brothers in the music business.

Seun attributed the his career accomplishments, that of his 60-year-old older brother Femi Kuti and his 20-year-old nephew Made Kuti, to their unrelenting  commitment to their craft. Seun Kuti continued by bringing attention the musical legacy of his family, pointing out that Fela’s father, Reverend Israel Ransome-Kuti, was also a musician.

Seun noted that although Reverend Ransome-Kuti made significant contributions to music, he was never given credit for his son Fela’s accomplishments.
