Sudan Archives Releases New Album ‘Natural Brown Prom Queen’

Sudan Archives has just released her hotly anticipated sophomore album Natural Brown Prom Queen via Stones Throw. From first listen, it’s immediately apparent that Natural Brown Prom Queen is Sudan’s most ambitious work to date, ranging from the disco-influenced R&B of “Home Maker” (named Best New Track by Pitchfork), to Afrocentric anthem “Selfish Soul” (named a Song You Need by The Fader), to the wild ride of “NBPQ (Topless)” (named a Best New Track by Hypebeast), and beyond.

The accolades haven’t been limited to the singles, with Stereogum naming Natural Brown Prom Queen their Album of the Week and Consequence declaring Sudan their Artist of the Month amid the album emerging as a fixture on “most anticipated album” lists ranging from Vulture to AV Club to Paste and more. Meanwhile her imaginative and world-building videos, including her latest genre-defying gesture “OMG BRITT,” earned her a spot in YouTube Music’s Foundry Class of 2022.

The overarching theme of Natural Brown Prom Queen is home – which manifests in lyrics about both Sudan’s adopted hometown of Los Angeles and Cincinnati, where she grew up. Across the album’s 18 songs she explores themes of race, womanhood, and the fiercely loyal, loving relationships at the heart of her life with family, friends, and partner.
