Tyla Reveals Why She Pushed Back Her Debut Album Release

Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Tyla Laura Seethal, better known by her stage name Tyla, has shared her story about how she postponed sending her debut album to her record label because of Tems. On Friday, March 22, 2024, the South African singer-songwriter published her self-titled debut album, featuring cameos from prominent international musicians.

Grammy-winning Nigerian R&B superstar Tems, American hip-hop artist Gunna, and Jamaican fast-rising sensation Skillbeng all made special appearances on the 14-track album. The album also featured Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum rapper Travis Scott, who was featured on the remix of her hit song “Water,” which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100.

Speaking about her collaboration with Tems on MTV Live, Tyla claimed that Tems sent over her verse and she told them to hold on just as she was ready to send the album to her record label. In addition, Tyla referred to Tems as the “Queen” of African music and mentioned that she had spent nearly three years preparing her debut album.

Following her enormous mainstream success in 2023 with her viral hit single “Water,” Tyla is releasing her debut album this year. At the 66th Grammy Awards, she won a Grammy for Best African Song Performance thanks to the single. The track also made it to top-charting spots in 16 nations, including the US and the UK.
