Yemi Alade Condemns The Lagos State Government For Demolishing Homes

Nigerian singer, Yemi Alade, has taken to X to criticize the Lagos State government for demolishing homes in the Mende neighborhood of Maryland.

On Monday, May 6, 2024, the performer called out the Lagos State leadership on her X page in response to news that the locals had been given only two hours to leave their homes before they were demolished. Alade voiced her dissatisfaction and urged the government to improve its notification policies prior to starting demolitions.

According to Yemi Alade, the demolitions are undermining people’s faith and optimism in addition to devaluing the state and nation’s real estate.

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, has clarified, nevertheless, that the buildings that were demolished were constructed on drainage channels. He said that despite having temporary and conditional authority to leave a 20-meter setback from System 1’s edge, the developer had encroached on the setback, preventing rainwater from flowing freely.

The Lagos administration has recently stepped up its efforts to demolish buildings that have been unlawfully built on waterways and other prohibited sites throughout the state. Houses on estates on the Island and in other regions of the state have been impacted by the exercise, which started last year. In the process, buildings that housed businesses have also been demolished.
