Tyler Perry Biography
Emmitt Perry Jr., the son of a carpenter named Emmitt Perry Sr. and Willie Maxine Perry (née Campbell), was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. Perry referred to his early years as a “living hell.” Unlike his father, his mother took him to church weekly, and he felt a sense of safety and contentment there. He legally changed his first name from “Emmitt” to “Tyler” when he was 16 to distance himself from his abusive father.
Perry received a General Educational Development (GED) diploma despite not finishing high school. In his early 20s, while watching an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show, he overheard someone discussing how writing can occasionally be therapeutic because it helps the author work through their issues. He was motivated by this remark to work hard at pursuing a writing career. He quickly began writing several letters to himself, and these letters inspired the musical “I Know I’ve Been Changed.”

Emmitt Perry Sr. and Willie Maxine Perry gave birth to Tyler Perry. Perry would go to church with his mother once a week because she attended. Because of the tense and abusive relationship, he had with his carpenter father, Perry experienced depression as a teenager. Perry’s mother, Willie Maxine Perry, died from an illness on 8 December 2009 at 64. He recently revealed in an interview that he had forgiven his father for the traumatized childhood he had.
