Actress Beverly Naya On Being Bullied While Growing Up
Beverly Naya, one of Nollywood’s finest actresses, has candidly spoken about her childhood struggles.
The actress recently talked about these experiences in a chat with well-known media personality Chude. She said that she had been physically and verbally abused by her peers due to her appearance when she was a small child.
The actress claimed that she was constantly referred to as Ugly and Unattractive. Naya recounted these scenarios to Chude and, in her words, said, “In my formative years, I was always getting bullied for one thing or the other. No matter what school I was in, I always felt like there was always going to be something for which I would get attacked. So, when I was younger, I was an ugly duckling. I wasn’t cute. I don’t care what my mom says. I was not a cute kid. I had crooked teeth and eczema. It just didn’t look good as far as I was concerned. And as far as people around me were concerned.”. In addition, Naya noted that she had received disparaging remarks about her appearance and explained how she overcame them.
“I was called ‘snakeskin, buck teeth, light bulb head, football legs.’ Just different kinds of stuff, and then I just blossomed. My skin cleared, I got braces, and I just grew. And I started to feel beautiful for the first time around 16. I probably owned it a bit too much for some people in my school. I got bullied for that, and it broke me.
The British-born Nigerian actress said, “I was like, ‘look, I can’t win.’ When I was younger, I was bullied for being ugly and unattractive. And now I finally feel like I’m beautiful and trying to own it; that’s now the problem. I’m now getting bullied for that. So, I got ganged up on and ended up with a black eye and a chipped tooth on the same day.”
Nigerian actress Naya was born in the United Kingdom. At 2010 Best of Nollywood Awards, she took home the award for Most Promising Talent.
