Chuck D Defends Madonna Performances; Slams “Ageist Trolls And Critics”

Amidst criticism of Madonna’s The Celebration Tour last week on Twitter, Chuck D has defended the iconic veteran singer. Using the term “ageism” to describe the attacks against her, he equated it with “racism.” Indeed, “Some hard songs” are in the singer’s collection, according to the 63-year-old Public Enemy rapper.

He wrote,

“At 63 i know i can bike better than i ever did and Pilates aint easy but i give it to @Madonna for pushing the bars,” “@FlavorFlav is taking Pilates too and hes 64. So ageism sometimes gets like racism both ways if you let it. For anyone over 50 the rule is either you do the songs or the songs do you. @Madonna has some hard songs to perform in her catalogue.”

Over the years, there has been an alliance between Madonna and Public Enemy’s careers. The song “Justify My Love,” which uses a beat sample from the Public Enemy song “Security in the First World,” was included on Queen of Pop’s 1990 greatest hits album, The Immaculate Collection. Lenny Kravitz and Ingrid Chavez wrote the classic, which, according to EW, features a drum sample from PE’s “Security of the First World” from the fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Famers’ historic 1988 It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back album. Madonna has not yet addressed D’s remark, though.

The “Vogue” singer began her much-awaited Celebration Tour, which honors the 40th anniversary of her debut album, in London’s O2 Arena in October after having to postpone her highly anticipated run of gigs. She will travel from Europe to North America for the duration of the tour, which will include 78 performances worldwide, ending in April 2024 in New York City, the city that gave her fame in the first place.
