Ed Sheeran Thanks Rihanna For Inspiring “Shape of You” As He Marks The Anniversary Of His Album, “÷”

British music icon, Ed Sheeran is reflecting on one of his most treasured albums as it marks its anniversary.

The singer-songwriters’ third studio album, ÷ (pronounced Divide), turned seven on Sunday. To mark the occasion, he posted a few pictures from the record’s making and the period immediately before its release on Instagram. He even thoughtfully acknowledged Rihanna among the throwbacks, citing her as an inspiration for the hugely successful song “Shape of You.”

A charming picture of Sheeran and the 36-year-old singer from the 2017 Grammy Awards started off his slide of images. The “Work” singer’s smile was particularly broad, as the two seemed to be beaming the whole time.

His caption, which included details about each photo he posted, read, “At the Grammys telling Rihanna ‘Shape of You’ was originally with her in mind.” It was revealed by Sheeran that the song was initially composed for the Barbados musician, and it is a dedication to Cherry Seaborn, his wife.

When he was working with co-writers, he revealed in a 2017 BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show interview that the song came together very haphazardly. In his “anniversary throwback dumpington,” the British celebrity gave thoughtful thought to the popularity of “Shape of You.”

He included two more photos: one with some of the song’s co-writers, and another with dancer Jennie Pegouskie, with whom he co-starred in the song’s music video.
