Fans Of Harlem World’s “The Movement” Commemorate 25th Anniversary

The hip-hop scene was forever changed with the debut album, ‘The Movement,’ from Harlem World in 1999. It was the first and only album from the group, but it left a significant mark on the music industry. On March 9, 2024, The Movement will have been in the world for 25 years. Although many new fans of hip-hop music may not be familiar with Harlem World, older fans understand that they were a thrilling hip-hop group of their time. The album has aged well, and it continues to carry the short-lived legacy of the group.

Mase, a prominent figure in the rap scene and current host of ‘It Is What It Is,’ founded Harlem World, a group of seven talented artists from Harlem. They began working on their debut album in 1995, released on March 9, 1999, through So So Def Recordings/Columbia Records. Harlem World released ‘The Movement’ during a time of cultural and artistic resurgence in Harlem, which provided the perfect backdrop for the group to channel their experiences, aspirations, and struggles into their music. ‘The Movement’ blended hip-hop, R&B, and soul with effortless finesse, creating a rich, immersive soundscape. The album’s sonic excellence was not surprising, given its impressive lineup of producers, including The Neptunes, Kanye West, Just Blaze, and Jermaine Dupri, among others. The group’s members handled most of the songwriting, with additional help from renowned songwriters such as Skip Scarborough, Melvin Smalls, Kanye West, and Pharrell Williams.

Although The Movement received negative reviews from critics when it was released, it was a commercial success. It peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold by the RIAA only a month after its release. Despite the album’s success, Harlem World disbanded later in 1999. However, we understand that their legacy has lived on through The Movement, which has continued to carry the group’s legacy over the past 25 years. Fans still appreciate the talent and creativity that Harlem World brought to the hip-hop scene and are grateful for their contribution to hip-hop music.
