Golden Globes Viewership Up 50% As Event Gets High Ratings After Network Change Amid Negative Reception

The Golden Globes ceremony this year saw a significant increase in viewership despite mixed reviews of some parts of the show and a change in TV networks. The event, broadcast on CBS for the first time, attracted 9.4 million viewers, according to Nielsen ratings, a 50% increase from the 2023 event. It was also streamed on Paramount+, making it the platform’s second-largest live-streamed special ever. Since last year’s Grammy Awards, the ceremony reportedly reached the largest live-streaming audience for CBS. The increase in viewership can be attributed to several factors. First, the enormous box office success of films like “Barbie,” “Oppenheimer,” and Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” likely contributed to the higher viewer numbers. Taylor Swift’s massive fan base likely tuned in to watch her performance and acceptance speech.

Moreover, the NFL games on CBS that preceded the Globes also likely played a role in attracting a larger audience. However, the change from NBC to CBS as the broadcasting network was not the only significant shift. Last year, the Hollywood Foreign Press lost ownership of the Golden Globes due to a lack of diversity, which also caused changes in the ceremony’s format. Although the show received mixed reviews, Jo Koy’s performance as this year’s host garnered criticism online, particularly for his joke about the NFL’s constant coverage of Taylor at Travis Kelce’s games. Despite the criticism, the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony was a success, with more people tuning in to watch it than in previous years.
