James Blake’s Viral Comments About The Music Industry Sees Kanye West, Tyler, The Creator, And More Weigh In

James Blake, a British musician and producer, caused a stir when he made remarks regarding the music business. He criticized the many labels and businesses that make money off of artists’ labor as well as the underpayment of artists. Artists are now voicing their opinions, including Tyler, The Creator and Kanye West. James Blake has previously dabbled in hip hop on multiple occasions and as such, his views cuts across the genres.

James Blake had said,

“If we want quality music somebody is gonna have to pay for it. Streaming services don’t pay properly, labels want a bigger cut than ever and just sit and wait for you to go viral, TikTok doesn’t pay properly, and touring is getting prohibitively expensive for most artists. The brainwashing worked and now people think music is free,”

“I really love music. I will continue to use my social media but only to connect with you guys. Music is my life’s purpose and I will not have mine destroyed by a bunch of labels and tech companies who don’t even pay us and exploit us relentlessly. Remember when my cover of ‘Godspeed’ went viral? Neither me nor Frank ever made a cent cause it was an ‘original sound’ in every video,”

Blake’s remarks were shared on social media by celebrities, including Tyler, The Creator, and Kanye. Tyler specifically posted it to his Instagram account with a “talk ya sh*t” caption. Specifically, Metro Boomin agreed with Blake’s complaints about TikTok and song tempo changes. His opinions were shared by other rap performers and producers, including Vic Mensa and The Alchemist, R&B singer Blood Orange, and jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD.
Fans also reacted to the post, and many called out a few labels that have continued to have artist issues in recent times.
