“James Ford Reveals Initial Plans for ‘The Car’ Were More ‘Outward-Facing’

In a recent interview with NME, producer and solo musician James Ford revealed that the initial plans for Arctic Monkeys’ album ‘The Car’ were intended to be more “outward-facing.” However, the direction of the album changed when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, leading to a more intimate and introspective collection of songs.

Ford shared that the album was supposed to be “bigger and more outward-facing,” but the pandemic led to a shift in focus. Alex Turner, the band’s frontman, retreated into his own bubble and returned with a set of beautiful, intimate, and melancholic songs. The album was recorded in a country house in Suffolk, providing a serene backdrop amidst the pandemic chaos.

Turner himself had previously mentioned that they had planned “to write louder songs than we had for some time.” However, the band discovered that the songs they had written were more than just heavy riffs. Turner added, “I think that’s the key difference maybe with [‘The Car’] and the last record… perhaps we didn’t quite have a grasp of the dynamics of the bigger, newer sounds we were exploring.”

Arctic Monkeys are currently touring the UK, performing in Norwich, Sheffield, Swansea, Southampton, and London. They will also headline Day 1 of Glastonbury on June 21, performing at the Pyramid Stage at 10:15 pm. The tour is a testament to the band’s resilience and adaptability, as they continue to create and perform music amidst the ongoing pandemic.

‘The Car’, which was crowned NME’s Album of the Year 2022, has been described as “a summary of the band’s story so far: sharp songwriting, relentless innovation and unbreakable teamwork.” Despite the changes in its initial vision, the album has been well-received by fans and critics alike, proving that Arctic Monkeys continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
