With “I Told Them…,” Burna Boy Achieves A New Feat On The UK Charts

Burna Boy is currently “Sitting on Top of the World” after becoming the first international Afrobeats artist to achieve a UK Number 1 album with I Told Them…, according to the Official Charts Company.

The Nigerian-born sensation, whose true name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, soars to the top with his fifth full-length release after previously finding success with the albums African Giant from 2019 and Twice As Tall from 2020, as well as coming near to the top with 2022’s Love, Damini.

With its sound gradually making its way into the UK Official Charts and influencing popular culture, from international superstars like Wizkid and Davido to up-and-coming musician Libianca, the Afrobeats genre has been expanding throughout the world in recent years.

Burna Boy becomes the first overseas Afrobeats singer to secure such a spot in UK chart history, yet homegrown British talent like J Hus has had chart-topping success on the Official Albums Chart. With his Number 1 Award in hand, Burna Boy took the stage at a crowded London Roundhouse tonight.

In response to the genre’s expansion, Official Charts and Afro Nation debuted the first-ever Official UK Afrobeats Chart in the summer of 2020.
