DJ Premier Opens His Own Record Store, Motivated By His Love For Vinyl

Renowned hip-hop producer and disc-jockey, DJ Premier, recently announced the opening of his own record store as a way to celebrate the vinyl format, which helps so many other Hip-hop DJs further their careers.

Monday, May 6, the renowned turntablist revealed on Instagram that he is launching a new business venture in collaboration with Ian Schwartzmann, his longtime manager.

This comes three weeks after a forthcoming joint project with the legendary Nas was announced. In 2023, hip-hop celebrated its 50th birthday, and it’s insane to consider that some musicians have been a part of the genre for longer than 50 years. Time came full circle on Friday, April 19, when DJ Premier and Esco reunited for their hit song “Define My Name,” in honor of Nas’ iconic debut Illmatic’s 30th anniversary.

Nas is able to dominate with his lyrical gymnastics on this nostalgic, classic-feeling single thanks to Preemo’s scratching. The Queensbridge legend muses on his ability to rhyme consistently well into his fifties, something he never would have imagined happening.

Preemo even briefly dabbles in rapping before Nas jokingly instructs him to stick to making beats and announces the arrival of a collaboration effort, which the world has been eagerly awaiting. In addition to sequencing the song, Premier also produced three records on Illmatic: “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park),” and “Represent.”
