Alex Usifo was born in Lagos on April 16, 1953, to the now-deceased Mr. Barnabas and Mrs. Patricia Anobi Omiagbo. After a few years in Lagos, they relocated to Ibadan, where Alex completed his elementary schooling. He finished secondary school at St. John Bosco’s Grammar School in Ubiaja, Edo state. He was accepted into the University of Lagos to pursue a diploma in public communication after graduating from the SS Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija-Ibadan Seminary. After receiving a degree in English from Ambrose-Ali University, where he graduated with a 2nd-Class upper degree, and after earning a Master’s in English at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and later a Ph.D. from Babcock University in Philosophy emerging as the President of the 2016 Postgraduate Class in the University, Illishan-Remo in Ogun State.

Before gracing the big screens, Alex claimed he had been jobless for a long time. Alex went to a Deeper Life Crusade on the invitation of his friend and brother Peter Okun, where he pleaded with God to alter his situation and received the response, “Look inwards.”

Soon after receiving his high school diploma, he became self-sufficient and began working at NTA Benin [formerly Midwest Television] . He was a BON [Broadcasting Organization of Nigeria] team member that covered FESTAC ’77. He was admitted to SS Peter and Paul Major Seminary, Bodija – Ibadan, in 1978 to pursue his studies for the Catholic priesthood after serving for five years in an operational capacity at NTA Benin. However, he left the seminary in 1981 after being accepted to the University of Lagos to pursue a diploma in public communication.

He felt the need to use his voice to touch people as time passed. He attended auditions at various media outlets, such as Radio Nigeria Lagos, Voice of Nigeria, NTA Illorin, etc., where he made it to the top list before being ultimately dismissed due to the “Quota System.” His acting career began in 1984 when he was pivotal in the Ray Yusuf-produced NTA, Illorin telemovie “The Return of the Native.” He then played significant roles in Baba Babs Fashina’s LTV 8 productions “Natas” and “Two People.” From then on, he began traveling to NTA, Victoria Island, to participate in the weekly program “At Your Service.” He was part of NTA productions: ‘Echoes of Life,’ and ‘Turning Wheel.’ All of these took place between 1984 and 1987.

He shot to popularity when he appeared in Zeb Ejiro’s soap opera, “Ripples,” which was broadcast on the NTA Network. Talaab Abass was his fabled and recognizable persona. His big chance came with this. People hurried home excitedly to watch the show. The shortage of soap operas and the lack of cable TV/channels made television history. People adored hating the villain he portrayed, Talaab Abass. With big bulging eyes and a baritone voice, Alex showed the character in a way that left spectators wanting more while playing with language. After Ripples, he went on to play the role of Chief Odiete in the film “Beyond Our Dreams,” and then he starred in Reemmy Jes’ “Dirty Game.” the phrase “Beyond our dreams,” people alternated between calling him Talab Abass and Chief Odiete.

Since he established a reputation for himself years before Nollywood was ever a thing, Alex Usifo, a legend or veteran in the acting world, has had a career that spans years before Nollywood. He had performed in theater productions like Larry Williams’ “Awero,” written, produced, and directed as plays. This performance took place at the National Theatre in Iganmu. He also appeared in Ola Rotimi’s “Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again!” which was presented at the National Theatre. Additionally, he appeared in radio plays and photoplays. Even the number of films he has appeared in has been lost to him. Alex Usifo is a fervent believer and a minister of the gospel despite the several occult roles he has played.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Andy Amenechi [DGN] and Alex Usifo founded a modeling agency together. Later, Alex Usifo went solo and established Silver and Gold Productions, which quickly rose to fame by producing top-notch models, including beauty queens Sandra Petgrave and Toyin Raji. Some well-known figures in the field started as models at “SilverModels.”

Later, he pursued his English degree at Ambrose-Ali University, where he graduated with a 2nd-Class higher. After that, he enrolled in the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology [LAUTECH] to pursue his Master’s degree. He entered Babcock University in Illishan Remo because he wanted to learn more, and there he earned a Ph.D. in Information Resources Management (IRM). He spent that time at Babcock, and in 2016, the year he graduated, he was chosen to serve as the outgoing Postgraduate students’ President.

AGN [Actors’ Guild of Nigeria] , DGN [Directors’ Guild of Nigeria] , and most recently, AMP [Association of Movie Producers] are all organizations Alex Usifo is a member of. He has been recognized and awarded throughout his career. Some of these awards include Best Actor (African Collaboration) at the Ghana Movie Awards, Best Actor at the Legends of Nollywood Awards, Lifetime Achievement Award at the Nollywood Christian Fellowship Awards, Excellent Achievement in the Movie Industry at the Niger Delta Awards, Outstanding Achievement in Nollywood at the Bells University Awards, Award for Excellence in Artistic Creativity, Rotaract Club of Sagamu Inspirational Award, Nollywood Icons Award at the Nigerian Film Corporation, etc.
