Rotimi Akeredolu Biography

Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu CON SAN, best known as Rotimi Akeredolu, is a Nigerian lawyer and politician who is currently the Governor of Ondo State. He assumed office on 24 February 2017. Akeredolu’s adopted prefix is “Arakunrin.” He is also addressed by his nickname, “Aketi.” Akeredolu is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

He became president of the Nigerian Bar Association in 2008. He was also a Managing Partner at the law firm of Olujinmi & Akeredolu, co-founded with former Attorney General and Minister for Justice of Nigeria Chief Akin Olujinmi. He was declared the Ondo governorship candidate after the primary elections under the platform of the APC on July 22, 2020. Akeredolu is the current Governor of Ondo State. He also doubles as the chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum.

Akeredolu was born and grew up in Owo. He started his primary education at a government school in Owo. He also attended Aquinas College, Akure, Loyola College, Ibadan, and a comprehensive high school, Ayetoro, for his secondary education. There, he earned his Higher School Certificate. Akeredolu proceeded to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) to study law. He graduated with a Law degree in 1977 and was later called the Nigerian Bar 1978.

I have never thought of being a governor. That thing is stressful, and I don’t want to go through it. People that are built for that, I wish them well.”

Rotimi Akeredolu’s wife is Mrs. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu. She hails from Emeabiam in Owerri West Local Government of Imo State. She is a breast cancer survivor and the founder and president of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN). BRECAN was founded in October 1997. Betty is a graduate of Zoology from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She also has a Master’s in Fisheries (major in Aquaculture) from the University of the Philippines. Betty is the chief executive officer/owner of Aquatek Farms Ventures. Her marriage to Rotimi Akeredolu is blessed with four children.

Lifestyle

In June 2023, Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu took a month-long sick leave while the state House of Assembly formally transferred his office to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, as the acting governor. In July, the state Commissioner for Information, Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, said he would be back only when his doctors say he is fit. “He is in high spirits and expects to join the people of the State as soon as his doctors consider it expedient.”

Political History

From 1997 to 1999, Rotimi Akeredolu was the Attorney General of Ondo State. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 1998. From 2005 to 2006, he was Chairman of the Legal Aid Council. After contesting the gubernatorial elections severally via the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), he was awarded a ticket to represent the All Progressive Congress (APC) at the 2016 elections. On Sunday, 27 November 2016, Akeredolu was declared the winner of the 2016 Ondo State gubernatorial election.

In 2020, after gathering the support of over 100 groups with 200,000 members across the three senatorial districts of Ondo State, he was re-elected as the state governor. He won 15 out of 18 local governments.
