Chris Stapleton Biography

Christopher Alvin Stapleton, best known as Chris Stapleton, is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Born in Lexington, Kentucky, and grew up in Staffordsville, Kentucky, Stapleton moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in 2001 to pursue an engineering degree from Vanderbilt University. He dropped out to pursue his music career. He signed a contract with Sea Gayle Music to write and publish his music.

He sang lead in two bands as a vocalist before recording as a solo artist. The bands include the SteelDrivers and the Jompson Brothers. He released his solo debut studio album titled Traveller in 2015. The critically acclaimed album reached number one on the US Billboard 200 and was certified four times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey” was certified Diamond by the RIAA. Two years later, he released his second studio album, From a Room: Volume 1, in May 2017. It earned him a second CMA Award for Album of the Year and a Grammy Award for Best Country Album. His third album, From a Room: Volume 2, was released in December 2017. His fourth studio album Starting Over was released in 2020, winning him his third Grammy for Best Country Album.

Stapleton has written and co-written over 170 songs. This includes six number-one co-written country songs. He co-wrote Kenny Chesney’s five-week number-one “Never Wanted Nothing More,” Josh Turner’s “Your Man,” George Strait’s “Love’s Gonna Make It Alright,” and Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer.” Many artists have covered his songs on their albums, including Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley, and Taylor Swift.

Stapleton has won several awards, including eight Grammy Awards, 10 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, and 14 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. He was the recipient of the ACM’s Artist-Songwriter of the Decade award. Rolling Stone ranked him at 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time in 2023.

Chris Stapleton is married to singer-songwriter Morgane Stapleton. Morgane co-wrote Carrie Underwood’s 2006 single “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.” She was signed to Arista Nashville.
