Iyanya Shares How The Naming Of His New Album Was Influenced By A Social Media Troll

Nigerian singer Iyanya discussed his most recent album, “Once Upon A Cat,” which showcases a number of up-and-coming musicians during a recent interview on Naija FM.

Iyanya stated that the album title was influenced by a social media troll’s remark when questioned about the inspiration for it and his choice to work with up-and-coming musicians. Last year, when Davido named Burna Boy, Rema, and Asake among the next breed of Afrobeats superstars, social media went crazy.

Fans tried to categorize who qualifies as an elderly cat and who is a new one, and the statement divided them. “That one is once upon a cat” was the pidgin response given by another social media user to the question “where would Iyanya be classified” during the conversation.

Iyanya disclosed that after much deliberation, he and his group had decided on the album’s title, and the troll’s remark was chosen right away. Iyanya included a number of up-and-coming musicians on the album, including Moonlight Afriqa, Tee Dollar, Qing Madi, M3lon, Pawwz, and Young Duu.

The singer disclosed that the intention to highlight these abilities drove the decision to do so. Iyanya also revealed his plans to remix his old hits and release an album with them. You can watch the full 23-minute-long interview below:
