Rema Wins At This Year’s Edition Of The MTV EMAs

Divine Ikubor, better known by his stage moniker, Rema, has just won this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards’ inaugural “Best Afrobeats” category, which is huge for both the artist and the genre.

The “Best Afrobeats” category a brand-new category, was unveiled at the 2023 edition of the award show. Aya Nakamura of France and Nigerian musicians Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema were among the first nominees.

Notwithstanding the Israel-Hamas conflict, which forced the organizers to postpone the award ceremony, the winners were announced on Sunday, November 6, 2023, against all odds. Rema was recognized as the winner of “Best Afrobeats,” and Diamond Platnumz of Tanzania bagged the title of “Best African Act.”

Jung Kook and Latto’s smash hit, “Seven,” won over Rema and Selena Gomez’s collaboration, “Calm Down” in the “Best Collaboration” category. The Grammy-winning Burna Boy, who was a nominee under three categories: “Best Afrobeats,” “Best African Act,” and “Best Live Performer,” must have been disappointed not to have won any.

Taylor, however, led as the artist with the most wins for the night, having been recognized in the “Best Video,” “Best Artiste,” and “Best Live” categories. Meanwhile, this new plaque for Rema in an all-new international Afrobeats category means the world now recognizes the Rave Lorde as the genre’s new poster boy.
