Tim Cook Biography

Timothy Donald Cook, born November 1, 1960, is an American business entrepreneur who has served as Apple Inc.’s CEO since 2011. Cook previously served as the company’s chief operations officer under Steve Jobs, the company’s co-founder. He is the first out gay CEO of a Fortune 500 firm.

Cook doubled Apple’s sales and earnings from 2011 to 2020, and the company’s market value climbed from $348 billion to $1.9 trillion. Cook is a trustee of Duke University and serves on the boards of directors of Nike, Inc. and the National Football Foundation.

Family

Parents

Tim’s parents are Donald and Geraldine Cook. Donald Cook, a resident of Alabama, was employed by a shipyard. At Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding, he was a foreman. The company had the most employees at Mobile during the time. Tim’s mother Geraldine was a pharmacist at Lee Drug Store in Robertsdale. Given that Donald and Geraldine have a private life, information about them is scarce.

Siblings

Tim grew up with his parents and two brothers, Gerald and Michael. Gerald is the oldest, Michael is the youngest, and Tim is the youngest.  Gerald, who began his career with the Internal Revenue Service, is now an analyst in a private firm in North Carolina. Michael, on the other hand, enlisted in the Air Force after graduating from high school. He is currently employed in the maritime industry.

Tim Cook is worth $1.5 billion. Tim was paid $500,000 per year as Apple’s Senior Vice President of Worldwide Operations prior to being named CEO. Tim Cook’s pay was increased to $900,000 per year when he first became CEO of Apple in 2011. Tim now earns $3.4 million in base salary plus an annual bonus of $8 to $12 million.

Tim receives substantial amounts of Apple options that vest over time in addition to his salary and bonus. In a given year, his vested shares are considered income. So, in 2019, Tim earned $113.5 million in vested shares on top of his salary and bonuses, bringing his total compensation for the year to about $125 million.

Tim received $963.5 million in total remuneration from Apple from 2011, when he was named CEO, and 2020. Tim receives around $500,000 in personal security expenses paid for by Apple in addition to his regular salary.

Tim lives in Palo Alto, California, in a fairly small 2,400 square-foot home despite being one of the world’s highest-paid business executives. He paid $1.9 million for the residence in 2010, the year before he was elected CEO. Tim also paid $10.1 million for a 10,000-square-foot home at the Madison Club, an exclusive gated enclave in La Quinta, California, in 2018.

Education

In 1978, Cook completed his education at Robertsdale High School in Alabama. Industrial engineering was his major in his undergraduate studies at Auburn University, which he completed in 1982. Duke University awarded him a Master of Business Administration in 1988.
