Meek Mill Wants To Donate 10% Of His Earnings To Combating Gun Violence In Philadelphia

It is not a new story that a long-running rivalry exists between Meek and Akademiks. DJ Akademiks, Meek Mill’s online adversary, has reacted to his request that he wants to collaborate with the city of Philadelphia to donate 10% of his music profits to the cause of reducing gun violence in his community. Taking to Twitter to discuss the passing of local rapper Phat Geez, Meek clarified that he wanted to commit to the notion by signing a contract. Although the post seemed optimistic, DJ Akademiks criticized him for the lyricism in his songs, which, according to Akademiks, promotes the same violence Meek is trying to curb. Though Meek Mill deserves praise for his initiative in giving back to the community, DJ Akademiks’ criticism highlights significant concerns regarding the influence of artists’ songs on society. This public exchange highlights the complex relationship between art, personal responsibility, and social change.

Meek wrote on Twitter,

“Ima do a public contract with the city of Philadelphia where 10% of my music earnings go to the city of Philadelphia to combat gun violence in our city… ima start this movement! PIP PHAT GEEZ. I wanna do in contract the city of Philadelphia!”

In response, Akademiks reacted,

“Rap about Gun Violence to increase violence in the inner cities by 400%, then pledge a measly 10% of your earnings from said rapping to combat the same violence your music just promoted… Wow, this guy is a saint..”

On Sunday night, a passenger in a car opened fire on Phat Geez, resulting in his shooting death in Philadelphia. The accused shooter is being offered $20,000 by the police, who have not yet made any arrests in the case. Additionally, on Monday, Meek said, “You see too much death!!!!” and called the city a “terrible place for black people to live.” Meek Mill’s comments highlight the ongoing issue of gun violence in Philadelphia, particularly within the black community. The police reward for information may help bring justice to Phat Geez’s tragic death.
