Wizkid’s “Essence” Bags R&B/Hip-Hop Song Of The Year At The 2023 ASCAP Awards

For his record-breaking smash track “Essence” with fellow Nigerian artist Tems, Afrobeats megastar Wizkid on Wednesday received the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Song of the Year honor.

For co-writing “Essence,” Wizkid’s international smash starring Tems, Nigerian record production team Uzezi Oniko and Okiemute Oniko, also known as Legendury Beatz, won the Top R&B/Hip-Hop & Rap Song of the Year award at the 2023 ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards.

The Legendary Beatz and P2J-produced song Essence was included on Wizkid’s fourth studio album, “Made in Lagos,” which was released in 2020. It later went on to become the album’s most streamed song and one of the most popular African songs of all time, helped along by a Justin-Bieber remix.

The American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers organized the award show. Dr. Luke won Songwriter of the Year for co-writing such popular songs as “Big Energy” by Latto, “Need to Know” by Doja Cat, and “Super Freaky Girl” by Nicki Minaj.

Publisher of the year was awarded to Warner Chappell Music for songs including “First Class” by Jack Harlow and “Break My Soul” and “Cuff It” by Beyoncé. Dr. Dre, a legendary rapper and producer, was given the first ASCAP Hip-Hop Icon Award.
